Typographic Poster

vector poster

Using what you have learned about manipulating type in Illustrator to create an original poster advertising an event or product, using ONLY TYPE. You may "cheat" a little and use a few glyphs, dingbats or simple geometric shapes, but it should not be an illustration composed of dingbats!

You might also want to start by searching for great typographic poster designs on Google to get some inspiration. For this project, you may even want to do your own version of something you find online.

Next, choose the event or product you're going to design for. This could be a movie or concert poster, a "bedroom" poster, an advertisement for a product or service, etc. Lots of examples of this kind of poster are just a poster about a specific typeface. This is a great way to get to know a particular typeface very well.

Make the work

Your finished poster should include a variety of sizes and weights of whatever typefaces you end up using. You could also use lots of different typefaces if you were going for a "ransom note" effect, but this is a lot harder to pull off. For most projects, it works best if you stick to one-two typefaces for the whole thing, and use a variety of sizes and weights. Think about how bold, italic and underline can direct they eye.

As always, think about the "order of reading" for the poster.

Size: 11x17"

Color: any, although black and white often works well with this project.

Descrive the type

Rather than filling out another form, for this project, you should put a description of the use of type right in the poster design. It could be down in the corner or it could be the whole point of the poster. Make sure to list the typeface(s) you use, including all the weights, and the range of sizes (in points).

What you need to do

Make a poster, save the original ai file on your computer, and save an optimized file to turn in. Name the file "Typographic_Poster_astudent.jpg".

What you need to turn in:

"Typographic_Poster_astudent.jpg"

What I will be grading:
