Tutorials and Play

Play Projects

First, watch this video about creativity.

Most creativity scientists have noted that there is a very strong relationship between play and creativity, in both children and adults. In order to attempt to increase our level of creativity, we will take time out of class periodically to create a "play" project. Requirements are as follows:

Files must be started and finished in the allotted time. If you miss class, or come late, you will have to make up the time missed outside of class.

Files must be no larger than 1000 pixels in either direction.

Files should be saved as "play_astudent01t.jpg", "play_astudent02.jpg", etc. Save your psd files in your "working files" folder, and save the optimized version in your "final" folder.

There are no requirements for subject matter, which tools you use, how you approach the work, etc. You can use type, effects, filters, whatever. You are free to experiment with a variety of ideas of to work on a series of pieces that relate to one another. The goal of this assignment is to get your brain working in a playful, less directed way, in order to increase your overall creativity and engagement in image-making. This work will be graded ONLY on whether or not it has been completed. There are not formal, conceptual or technical requirements for this project. Feel free to listen to your ipod, and HAVE FUN!!

Also, here's a good article about creativity from Communication Arts magazine.

Tutorial Projects

"Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for a day..."

We will not cover every aspect of Photoshop in this course, or even most aspects. There are thousands of great tutorials online that help you with various tools and projects that we won't get to. Throughout the semester, you will be required to find and complete a variety of tutorials to teach yourself about how to use Photoshop, and to practice the very important skill of self-directed learning.

You will be required to submit your completed tute, along with the URL, and the beginning example. Use the form when submitting a tutorial.

Save these files as "tutorial_astudent01.doc", "tutorial_astudent02.doc"

You can find some good tutorial links on my links page. Remember to email me with any good links you think I should add.
