CMYK Print

Edition Size: Five
Print Size: about 11x15"

Students have the option of creating the print using any of the following media:

Screenprinting
Lithography
Relief
Intaglio
Monoprint

Digital printing (ink-jet) is not acceptable for this project.

Prepare image

This print may be photographic or hand-drawn in nature. The most obvious solution is to find a photograph and reproduce it in CMYK. Although this fulfills the technical aspect of this assignment, and could be a good approach to the assignment, you may also want to be more creative in your approach. An image could be collaged, either digitally or by hand, and scanned into the computer to create an original composition. Additionally, the image could be created by hand, as a four-color drawing. Additionally, the CMYK colors could be modified somewhat to achieve a certain look.

Separate Channels

Use Photoshop to separate the CMYK file into four separate files.

Prepare matrixes

Each of the channels you created will be printed separately. This may necessitate bitmapping the files, or using your grayscale images as guides for drawing, etching, monoprinting, etc. Make sure your registration system is perfect. You may need to calendar paper, make registration tabs or marks, etc.

Proof and print edition

Print your CMYK plates in the correct order (CMYK) making sure to add the appropriate amount of transparency. As this is primarily a technical assignment, take care to print carefully. Compare each impression to your B.A.T. to make sure the print isn't gradually lightening or darkening as you print.

Sign and number your prints appropriately.
