Art History Project Guidelines and Forms

Go to this page, and look at the images of some famous photographers. You will be assigned an artist from this page to work with.

Start by researching your artist. Look for information about him or her online, or in your art history books. Write a description about the piece, based on your research and observation. Describe the media, size, artist, era, nationality and of course the story behind the piece. Talk about the formal elements and emotional content of the piece.

Next, think about how you can make a new artwork that is formally and conceptually related to the original. There are lots of ways to update or change the work you've been assigned. You might choose to work in the style of this artist, or to work with the subject that this artist used, or to deal with the same content. Remember that subject and content are not the same thing.

Spend some time brainstorming, and come up with five sketches of possible solutions to the assignment in your sketchbook. Scan these, and combine them into one image.

Students must follow all the guidelines in the Art History Project form, and complete not only the print, but also the documentation.
