The oldest form of printmaking, woodcuts are simply inked impression from the raised areas on a block of wood. Contemporary printmakers typically use fine grained veneer plywood. Etchings are created by scratching through a resistant coating on copper or zinc plates, and immersing the plate in acid. The acid eats grooves in the plate, which are filled with ink and printed.
